Edmonton Public Library – Capilano Branch

Located on an orphaned portion of the ravine, the Capilano Branch Library has become the catalyst for a city-scale change. This project focused on equally shared responsibility between two architecture firms. Group2 acted as the Prime Consultant & Patkau Architects as the Design Architect. The firms embraced a collaborative approach to design balancing responsibility during each stage of the project.

Location Edmonton, AB

The interior organization of the library is planned as three zones parallel to the ravine including flexible spaces for staff, collections, and community along with fixed spaces which form a quiet edge to the street. On the interior, a day lit folding wood ceiling provides a sense of intimacy and openness. The wood ceiling unites the interior and exterior spaces and is carefully detailed to coordinate lights, security and sprinkler systems within a consistent order.

A small but mighty Makerspace unleashes the creative potential of the digital library community member. Incorporation of technology and equipment increases creation, collaboration and sharing. The Makerspace features a 3D printer, Cricut design space, IMac computers, digital conversion tools and more. Technological innovation is embraced throughout this facility.
