Morrin K-12 Replacement School

Morrin K-12 Replacement School

This project featured the construction of a replacement single storey K-12 school in the small village of Morrin, Alberta with targeted LEED Silver certification. The existing school on site was set to be demolished, but a portion of the existing school is being saved and renovated by the school board in a separate project to accommodate CTS and art/science classes. At just 2,531m² and a capacity of 187 students, unique programming opportunity was a challenge.

The school centers around the gym with a large Skyfold wall that opens into the flex space and is sized to accommodate volleyball tournaments. Because of the smaller size of the school, multi-use spaces were designed as learning and spectator spaces including a presentation stair and mezzanine. Other programs include a foods lab, breakout rooms, library, and an outdoor classroom.

Sitework included a staff parking lot, bus layby, parent drop off, asphalt play surface, and landscaping. A new playground was installed by the school board during the construction of the new school, while the existing playground and community garden on site were also maintained.
