The Meadows branch of the Edmonton Public Libraries, while fully integrated into the Meadows Community Recreation Centre, occupies its own unique space both from within the Centre and from the exterior with colored wings that identify the space as distinctly Edmonton Public Library.
The undulating roof-scape designed to reflect the Alberta prairie landscape, provides natural lighting and serves to articulate the library as a distinctive yet integrated element of the whole community centre. From within, the massing and materiality of the roof defines the various areas: the lower portion of the roof defines the intimate children’s area complete with reading hill, and connects the interior with the outdoor reading garden and amphitheater, while the higher roof line opens out to the civic plaza and the main entrance. This main library area contains a large multi-purpose program room, quiet study room, study carrels and lounge areas for flexibility and variety of use.
