Ritchie Market

The Ritchie Market building is a community hub in one of Edmonton’s mature neighborhoods. Conceived as an homage to the neighborhood’s industrial past, it houses four diverse local businesses: a craft brewery and restaurant, a coffee roaster and café, a butcher and a bike rental shop.

Location Edmonton, AB

The limited site enforced tight parameters on the building’s functional relationships. Generally, publically accessible retail areas are located on the main floor and the second floor is reserved for private functions. A pedestrian lane has been developed on the east side of the building to provide connection through the site, access to bike rentals and amenity setback from the adjacent residence. The west side has a generous plaza divided equally between a seasonal patio and bicycle parking.

The material palette emphasizes raw, natural materials and includes weathering steel, board formed concrete, corrugated steel and brick.
The interior continues the industrial aesthetic with exposed steel structure, building systems and solid fir floor and roof deck.
  • Honestly, being at work early in Ritchie Market is a beautiful thing. Sometimes I have to pinch myself.
