Flight of Wines

The Edmonton International Airport Authority (EIAA) developed a set of design guide-lines to create themed areas for retail throughout the airport. Flight of Wines was an existing tenant on the Departure/Arrival level that had an opportunity to expand its space within the “River Valley” themed area. For the project, this meant using primarily wood and natural materials to contribute to the feel of the airside concourse.

Location Edmonton, AB

The tenant and the landlord (EIAA) were looking for something that was distinctive and iconic. The result was a 4.5m tall deconstructed wine barrel that serves both functionally as a storefront element, and a showcase for displaying wine. In addition to the functional and iconic elements, a secondary goal was to extend the element out into the concourse to engage passerby and potential customers, not only when the shop was open, but even at night, when most of the concourse was closed. This added restrictions, both for security, as well as protecting the wine from sunlight. Integral infrared-protective glazing was included to achieve these goals, as well as utilizing lighting that had minimal infrared spectrum.

The new design, a beautiful barrel shaped wine rack that extends into the concourse with glazing, allowed the client to keep the product secure and showcases it to people walking by.
