Brainsport Retail Renovation

Renovation of a 90 year old building that had previously served as a lumber store, an antique store, and an ice cream shop – into a retail running store.

Location Saskatoon, SK

In 2013, Brainsport, a well-established Saskatoon running store, was looking to move to a new home but wanted to remain in Nutana Neighbourhood, close the running trails located along the South Saskatchewan river. The store decided to relocate to an existing building just down the street. The building, built in the early 1900’s, originally served as a lumber store, offering a large double volume space flanked on either side with structural wooden A-frame columns. The budget-conscious design re-used many of the building’s existing architectural elements and finishes. The original hardwood fir flooring was re-purposed as cladding for display cases and the A-Frame columns adapted into shoe shelving. Gym flooring was salvaged from a local high school and re-used as the flooring throughout the building. The existing upper level and mezzanine was redeveloped into office and administration space, a retail mezzanine that overlooks the retail floor, and a community room that hosts the weekly running/walking clinics and community-based events that promote sport, wellness, and health within the community.
