Athabasca Aquatic & Fitness Centre

The Athabasca Indoor Pool & Fitness Centre is a replacement recreation facility located on the existing Athabasca Multiplex site, sharing a connected civic landscape with the Edwin Parr Composite High School. Designed to support Athabasca’s long‑term growth and wellness goals, the facility expands recreational opportunities for both local residents and the broader regional population, reinforcing the site as a key community destination.
As Bridging Architect, Group2 worked closely with the Town of Athabasca, County representatives, and the Pool Design Committee to guide the programming, design, and construction of the facility. Organized around three primary components, natatorium, fitness centre, and community spaces, the building accommodates approximately 500 patrons and offers a range of social, cultural, and recreational opportunities for both the public and students. Beyond the original scope, the project integrates sustainable design strategies including an insulated translucent panel system, sun‑shading devices, low‑flow and temperature‑controlled water systems, and infrastructure capacity for a future photovoltaic solar installation.
