Triffo Hall was initiated by our predecessor firm Barry Johns (Architecture) Limited, Architect of Record.

Triffo Hall represents the rebirth of the existing South Lab, one of the oldest buildings on the University of Alberta North Campus, dating back to 1915. Included within the existing structure are loft like spaces that accommodate a variety of common working and social spaces alongside enclosed offices as well as a teaching lab.

The design is structured around an interior street which runs the length of the building and connects all programmatic elements. Punctures through the second floor allow the two storey interior street to be flooded by natural light while also providing a connection between the groups. The result is a daylit environment that is implicitly connected to the original structure. The interior street is connected to entry space that is both efficient and philosophically based as it relates to effective wayfinding and the Killam Trust philosophy to ‘open doors through education’.

The project received LEED® Gold Certification with the Canadian Green Building Council.
